In Life of Pi, Yan Martel uses great detail in his writing to elicit connections among the reader to the overall meaning of Pi’s story; “to make you believe in god”

KellyE~ As we discussed after school, you will need to decide one focus for your paper. It will be too difficult to write about both topics. Plus, it ends up sounding contradictory. What I think we discussed that would work well is to use an ‘Although _________, ….statement.
SierraM~ Question…when you say “the distorted state of mind from tramatizing events…create[s] Pi’s story story” are you saying that it is ultimately a result of his disillusionment that the tiger story evolves? Think about the answer to this and rework the thesis.
Logan~ Your thesis is still too much of an observation. Think about making it persuasive. What does the use of symbolism cause in more so than simply a connection between animals and religion? In other words, could you argue that because of the use of religious symbols, readers understand that animals and religion are intertwined?
Spencer~ This works very well; it is persuasive and to the point. Great question, by the way. I think I would say… “a failed attempt” by an author trying to create a character that reaches resolution in the hero’s journey.
BenM~ Right now this is too literal. The reader needs to know what symbols (and you might consider using only one or two) and what these symbols cause, create, etc. For example: In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses the “inconstant moon” to force readers to see that the viewpoints change; this vantage point is what causes their deaths. Think about what the connection is between a symbol and animals, science, and religion. How does Martel’s use of such symbol change our understanding of Pi, the story, etc.?
No worries...more thesis statement input to come!
10:29 PM
Kyle~ This looks very strong: persuasive with a focus of topics within the thesis. Just an FYI: add an apostrophe in heros=hero’s.
Taylor~ I am totally intrigued. This works so well and like the comment I gave to Kyle, you are using a 3-point thesis to give a visual outline to your readers. The only thing I would consider is when you state “to exemplify the meaning of the novel,” you might think about revealing what that is in your thesis. I think it can be an exploration, though, where you don’t reveal that meaning until the end.
MeaghanK~ You will need to state which story you believe and why this is the only way to read this piece—the only one that is logical, is poetic, etc. Choose which story and then why you chose it.
Natasha~ The only comment I have is to clarify for your reader what the “deeper understanding of Pi” is. You may not know this right now until you write further and research more, but this needs to be clear in your thesis. Since you want to state that the story with the animals is true, you need to state this persuasion in your thesis.
10:37 PM
Fano~ I know we discussed this in class; this works well. A couple things to consider to strengthen this…what conflict? (use’s should be uses) and how can you change the words to make it more persuasive? Instead of “which helps” could you say which was his only route to becoming “spiritually one”?
BrianL~ Couple things…what is the symbolic world specifically? What does the fight through life ultimately create, cause? I like this idea that everyone in the world has a mother, friend, and enemy. Could you use an Although everyone has a mother….., Martel in Life of Pi creates a false reality for its readers in which protect us from the harsh realities of not only Pi’s story, but our own? Something like that? I am intrigued by this idea; play with the wording, Brian.
Ian~ Just a note, American is capitalized, but literature is not, since you are not talking about a specific class. You just need to tighten the wording from “illustrates moods a character goes through” to “illustrates a character’s moods”. I also think the first part of the thesis can be stated in your introduction prior to your thesis. Then, it might sounds like: In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the main character Pi…SHOWS (instead of illustrates) HIS MOODS (despair, lonliness, …) and the will to survive which FORCE a reader to observe their own inner tiger. The challenge of course, will be finding a way to find connections between the text and the reader in regards to our “inner tiger.” This is wonderfully interesting, Ian.
Mitch~ Right now you are making observations. You need to pick just a few symbols, list them in your thesis and decide what the effect was. You could choose simply one symbol and argue that this one symbol reveals Pi’s journey and is necessary to understand ____.
David~ What I like about your thesis is that you are stating that he is not a hero globally, but became one for simply himself. Interesting idea and one that really makes sense.
Billy~ This seems so simplistic, but is persuasive. You might think about one particular stage that really shows is archetypal hero. You could put a semi-colon at the end of your thesis and add a sentence that explains how one stage was where he moves from an interesting, conflicted character to one that is a classic hero.
10:56 PM
Kyle~ I think your first thesis is more persuasive than your second, but I like that you were considering each of the stages. This will need to be explained throughout your paper.
Kevin~ This is straightforward and persuasive. You will need to keep in mind as you write your paper, that in order to move this from a paper that does simple transitions: in the first stage Pi…in the second stage Pi… Think about what in each stage really typifies the archetypal hero. You might do a little research online in regards to archetypal heroes and what makes them one, so you know what to argue.
Wes~ “bangle tiger” spell check isn’t catching it; it’s Bengal tiger. The second part of your thesis is so persuasive. The only thing I would add is at the end put journey in quotation marks, so we already get the sense what story you are choosing as false.
JenF~ What makes this so strong is that you state immediately what was the cause of Pi becoming a hero: his battles on the ocean. Very good!
MelissaB~ Like Jen’s, this thesis works well because it is clear and to the point. Read what I wrote to Kevin as this applies to all the hero’s journey topics.
11:05 PM
Dan~ What really makes this thesis strong is that you specifically state what is the cause of Pi reaching resolution and then you explain that it is necessary to ever become a hero.
Steven and Conor~ the two parts of your thesis is what makes this so persuasive. I am intrigued by where you each will take this. Excellent!
Michael~ I like how you didn’t just state: the animal story is representative of humans. Instead you explained why he creates the animals and then, who they represent. Just be cognizant to keep the persuasive slant throughout and not to just make observations. You are persuading us to believe that the animal story is not true.
Andrew~ use a colon instead of a semi-colon after “Pi’s story”. The only part that is vague is the “great detail” part. Once you start pulling out quotes, decide how he creates those connections…symbolism, syntax (word choice), dialogue, etc. FYII like your first thesis best.
DavidT ~ The essence of your thesis is excellent. As a reader, I get a little lost in the wording. Try to tighten up the language so the persuasion is clear. Answer what does the existentialist theory provide to its readers and to an understanding of Pi?
Ok...all for now, but I will add more, first thing Sat. morning! Wonderful writing you all. I am so pleased and can't wait to share the good news to your Am. Lit. teachers that your ALIS writing has paid off. Well done, y'all!
11:17 PM
Did you read my last paragraph? How many "all's" can I possibly use?
I meant to say that's all for now. Obviously I'm tired. Be safe and happy writing thoughts to you!
11:19 PM
Mandy~ This is a wonderful start. You need to be more persuasive in the last part: “in order to achieve harmony with his environment” Is this what CAUSED harmony, did these challenges force him into chaos? And if so, what did he realize in order to reach resolution?
Kelsey~ Do you think Pi would hold up as a classical hero, or one that remains so only to himself? Will his movement through the stages make him a hero, or a character that finds simple resolution?
Jen~ Strong focus and persuasion. This is perfectly clear what forces him to view himself as a hero.
Eric W~ Wonderful job outlining the topics in your thesis as well as stating what his enforcement of life’s outlook created.
6:33 PM
Kieran~ So intrigued, Kieran. What is powerful about the 2nd sentence is the fact that you not only state that the entire book can be whittled down into a clear message, but you also state that the message deals with religion’s power and purpose. Excellent.
KellyO~ Great start. You need to go to the next level, however. Answer so what? What does the fact that bananas represent Pi’s highs and lows mean? What does this understanding create for Pi, for the readers, for life? This needs to be answered to move your thesis beyond an observation into persuasion.
Wade~ Excellent. You have stated that you are looking at religious symbols and have moved into true analysis—what does this understanding cause? You answer this with the second half of your thesis.
Aubrey~ What symbolic events does he use? And, what do isolation and animal relationships create, cause, show, etc.? To get to the persuasive level, you need to answer theses questions.
6:39 PM
Becky~ This is a little too wordy. Answer this question: what does the belief in religion cause for Pi, for readers, for others in the book? I think you are answering this below, but I’m getting lost in your phrasing.
Karen~ Excellent way to state how animals represent a piece of him. But, you need to take this to the next level. What does this use of personification create, show, cause? Does it create an understanding of what the true story of Pi is?
Ellen~ As we discussed in class, the 2nd part is needed to get to the so what portion of the thesis. By answering this, you made this persuasive. Well done.
Denise~ Eeek! I haven’t been able to watch the movie yet! I know…I know. How crazy has my weekend been! What I love about this thesis is that it throws such seemingly unconnected ideas together: goblins and tigers; Yann Martel and Jim Henson. But, you will need to take it to the next level. Explain what the comparision of these 2 films create in the reader, with an understanding of Pi, and/or an understanding of the existentialist theory.
Bryon~ I am so engaged and can’t wait to see where you take this essay. This island is such a strange piece and I think offers great meaning to the overall story.
Marc~ What works so well for a comparison/contrast paper is the format for your thesis. This allows you to acknowledge their likenesses, yet still argue that their differences are quite diverse. Take this one step further. ….showing that Pi is not a hero…or is.
6:48 PM
Amanda~ The format for your thesis is very persuasive. The only thing to consider is strengthening the ending. What does “contain a psychological behavior” mean? State this clearly and this will be very strong.
Andrea~ What I love about your thesis is the literary device you chose to analyze this novel with and the way you structured the thesis. You are allowing for an acknowledgment of the other story, yet being completely clear which story you believe. Excellent!
6:51 PM
I am comparing Beowulf and Pi as heroes according to the stages of a hero:
By comparing these two characters one can find that both Pi and Beowulf follow the stages of a hero, but Beowulf better fits the classically accepted characteristics of a hero.
11:29 AM
Jim, what's powerful about your thesis is that you take a persuasive stance, one that is clear and effective.

Thesis: In the novel, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the main character, Pi shows the different effects that religion has on the caracter in the novel depending on if they believe it, and how Pi’s religion is what ends up saving him.
4:22 PM
The need of the most essential element, water, is presented over and over again in Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi which leads us to find a deeper understanding of what thirst really is.
10:46 PM
Throughout The Life of Pi, Pi studies three different religions which all contribute to his survival spirtually and physically ; each challange his beliefs, shaping him throughout his journey.

Yann Martels' Life of Pi expresses the need of humans to survive by showing Pi's struggle and fight throughout the book.
12:42 PM
Thesis Statement: After Martel offers the reader and after Pi offers a choice to his interviewers, I believe that neither story is real story of the "Life of Pi".
1:51 PM
Although throughout the book, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, it shows Pi's interaction with other animals while stuck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, he tells two different stories to his interviewers; one involving animals, and the other with humans. By analyzing this book more in depth, it becomes clear that the human story has to be true for many reasons.
4:52 PM
Yann Martel's the Life of Pi helps to demonstrate exactly how much the mind, body, and soul can endure without being pushed beyond its breaking point.
9:28 PM
THESIS STATEMENT: In the "Life of Pi", Yann Martel is trying to convey to his readers that critical thinking, inspirations, and love are the important keys to survival.
12:43 PM
In Martel's novel Life of Pi, Pi presents two different stories to allow the reader to choose which to believe. Personally, I would believe the animal story because the human story would be too much for Pi to endure.

In The Life of Pi, Pi studies three different religions; Islam which contributes to his structure, Christianity which hepls him make realistic decisions, and Hinduism which helps him with being in tune with the world. Although he takes componants form each religion, each contributes to him spiritually and physically, shaping him throughout his journey.

Although many people believe the animal story to be true, I believe that the animals are manifestation of Pi's psyche.

Can someone tell me how does suffering transform or create new identities in Life of Pi??
4:25 AM
I am writing a essay on the ying yang feature of the book, animal versus human. Pi's internal stuggle within himself. One of my topic sentances is: Even though you don't know till the end of the book Richard Parker and Pi are one, there are many example of the sturggles within him.
Does anyone know an example of his stuggle

In the novel, Life of Pi, the protagonist, Pi Patel's desperation to survive parallel's his loss of innocence.

I don't understand most ppl aren't really giving a thesis, since it does not involve a theme statements. EX) Yan Martle's "life of pi" reveals that only through the balance of spiritual and physical means can one transcend survival.
I know its really wordy but along the lines of that example. Also there should never be mention of character in a statement of theme under any circumstance, since it would weaken the essay or the essay would be a descriptive disaster.
7:36 PM
In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi is faced with a horrific event and his mind creates "Richard Parker" To enable Pi to cope with the situation; "Richard Parker" also symbolizes Pi's fierce will to live.
